(SMART INFO) "Orang-Orang Hebat Indonesia di Luar Negeri"

Dari Miliarder AS hingga Orang Terpenting Jepang

Menjadi orang kaya tak melulu harus menjadi pengusaha. Memiliki otak encer dan berprestasi akademik tanpa terlibat dalam dunia politik pun bisa menjadi jalan untuk menjadi orang kaya.

Syaratnya cuma satu. Jangan berkiprah di Tanah Air. Setidaknya syarat ini diisyaratkan:

Sehat Sutardja,

Pria kelahiran Jakarta , 49 tahun silam. Nama ini mungkin terdengar asing dan tidak familiar di Tanah Air. Tapi di Amerika Serikat, Sehat adalah cerita sukses perjuangan seorang imigran yang tetap mengagungkan ilmu untuk meraih sukses. Sadar menjadi cerdas di Indonesia tak bakalan dihargai oleh negara , ia hijrah ke AS saat usianya masih 19 tahun.

Ia pun memilih tinggal dan menjadi warga AS. Siapa sangka, Sehat kini termasuk salah satu orang terkaya di negeri Paman Sam, Amerika Serikat (AS).

Bersama kakaknya, Pantas Sutardja, Sehat mendirikan Marvell Technology Group, perusahaan yang terdaftar dan go public di indeks bursa Nasdaq New York Stock Exchange.

Namanya tercantum dalam majalah Forbes dengan kekayaan bersih 1 miliar dolar AS atau sekitar Rp. 10 triliun ( kurs Rp. 10 ribu per dolar AS . Ia masuk dalam kategori Exclusive Billioners Club untuk pertama kalinya di tahun 2007. Perjuangan Sehat bersama tiga orang teman menembus industri semikonduktor di AS bisa menginspirasi ketika seseorang yang bukan siapa-siapa menjadi apa-apa. Kini Marvell, perusahaan yang dibentuknya tahun 1995, berkibar sebagai perusahaan yang paling dipercaya publik tahun 2005. Hanya dalam waktu 10 tahun!

Bukan Cuma itu, Marvell tercatat sebagai one of the best managed company in America dan menjadi kampium di semi-conductor company top ten list. Semuanya bergengsi karena yang memilihnya adalah majalah Forbes, majalah referensi utama ekonomi dunia. Kisah Sehat dimulai saat ia kelas enam sekolah dasar di Jakarta sekitar tahun 1970-an. Ia baru menyadari ketertarikannya pada bidang elektronik ( komputer belum populer saat itu). Ia menyampaikan kepada orangtuanya bahwa ia bakal berkarir di bidang elektronik.

Orangtuannya heran. Maklumlah, tahun 1970-an, karier di bidang elektronik berarti menjadi tukang reparasi radio, dan syukur-syukur TV yang masih jarang waktu itu. Sang bapak dan Ibu ingin Sehat menjadi dokter.

Sehat kecil sudah bermimpi menciptakan hal-hal hebat yang muncul dari elektronik. Dia mulai gandrung dengan elektronika saat tanpa sengaja menemukan buku fisika milik saudaranya yang membahas soal listrik, rangkaian, kapasitor, resistor dan sebagainya. 30 tahun setelah itu, ia bukan saja mewujudkan mimpinya. Ia bahkan membuat bangga Indonesia meski tak lagi menjadi WNI. Tamat SMA di Kolese Kanisius, Jakarta,Sehat yang memiliki otak cerdas berpikir sekolah di Indonesia belum menghargai ilmu. Bermodalkan semangat, ia melamar di University of California,Berkeley, AS. Diterima di universitas bergengsi tak berarti jalan hidup Sehat lurus-lurus saja. Pada 1995,Sehat berpikir bahwa bila ingin sukses ia harus memiliki perusahaan sendiri. Maka, bersama Pantas, dan istrinya, Weili Dai, mereka mengumpulkan duit lalu mendirikan perusahaan IT, Marvell Group. Tahun-tahun awal dilalui dengan sukses berat. Mereka bekerja tak kenal waktu siang dan malam demi kesempurnaan produknya. Mereka bahkan tidak menggaji diri mereka sendiri dan hidup dalam kesederhanaan. Jarang sekali mereka bertemu dengan keluarga. Bahkan saat produk pertama mereka muncul di pasaran, mereka masih harus berjuang keras meyakinkan pembeli untuk membeli produk mereka tersebut. “Saat itu kami sangat-sangat kecil, terlalu berisiko,” kenang Sehat. “Saat itu sangat berat untuk kami. Kami rasa saat itu kami beruntung mendapatkan pelanggan, namun kami berhasil menciptakan produk yang tak dapat dilakukan oleh pesaing kami. Setelah tiga atau empat tahun berjalan, kami mendapatkan satu pelanggan. Tahun berikutnya kami mendapatkan pelanggan lainnya.”

Akhirnya mereka berhasil. Tahun 2003, Ernst & Young menganugerahi Sehat dan istrinya sebagai Entrepreneur of the Year atas kegigihan mereka dalam inovasi, kepemimpinan teknologi, dan kesuksesan bisnis. Marvell bermarkas di Sunnyvale, AS. Hanya butuh waktu 10 tahun untuk membesarkan Marvell. Siapa yang mengira hanya dalam tempo 10 tahun, Sehat kini memimpin Marvell yang memiliki 1.800 pegawai dan menjelma menjadi perusahaan berharga miliaran dolar AS. Berdasarkan kesuksesan dan pengalamannya, Sehat memberikan nasihat kepada para mahasiswanya “Belajarlah sebanyak mungkin, tentang software, biologi, fisika lanjutan, semua hal. Mengetahui satu jenis pengetahuan saja tidaklah cukup. Banyak orang berhenti belajar ketika mereka ingin menjadi seorang pengusaha. Itu adalah kesalahan terbesar yang ada.”


Nelson Tansu - Profesor Termuda

Kisah sukses lainnya diperlihatkan Profesor Nelson Tansu. Siapa lagi nih? Asal tahu saja, Nelson adalah peraih gelar profesor termuda di AS. Nelson adalah ilmuwan kelahiran Medan, 20 Oktober 1977. Ia meraih gelar profesor di bidang electrical engineering sebelum berusia 30 tahun. Ia menjadi lulusan terbaik dari SMA Sutomo 1 Medan. Pernah menjadi finalis team Indonesia di Olimpiade Fisika. Meraih gelar sarjana dari Wisconsin University yang ditempuhnya dalam 2 tahun 9 bulan dan dengan predikat Summa Cum Laude. Ia meraih gelar PhD dalam usia 26 tahun di universitas yang sama. Nelson mengaku, orang tuanya hanya membiayai pendidikannya hingga sarjana. Selebihnya, karena otaknya yang encer, ia menjadi rebutan tawaran beasiswa. Dia juga merupakan orang Indonesia pertama yang menjadi profesor di Lehigh University, tempatnya bekerja sekarang.

Tesis doktoralnya mendapat award sebagai “The 2003 Harold A. Peterson Best ECE Research Paper Award” mengalahkan 300 tesis doktoral lainnya.


Yow-Pin Lim - Acuan Utama

Yow-Pin Lim, putra kelahiran Surabaya adalah contoh lain kisah sukses putra Indonesia di luar negeri. Ia adalah pendiri Chief Scientific Officer Pro Thera Biologics, sebuah perusahaan di Rhode Island, AS. Pro Thera dibentuk sebagai keberlanjutan teknologi yang telah dikembangkan di Rhode Island Hospital, dengan misi mengembangkan dan memasarkan produk berbasiskan protein theranostic dan therapeutic.

Riset yang dihasilkan pria kelahiran Cirebon 49 tahun yang lalu ini berkontribusi pada pemahaman terhadap molekul kompleks pada fisiologi manusia dan berbagai macam penyakit, terutama sepsis, anthrax, dan kanker. Lim kini memiliki beberapa paten, antara lain Preparative Electrophoresis Device and Methods for Detecting Cancer of the Central Nervous System. Hebatnya penemuan Lim menjadi acuan utama rumah sakit-rumah sakit di AS saat ini.


Yanuar Nugroho - Dosen Terbaik Inggris

Tahun 2009 lalu, seorang putra Indonesia menyedot perhatian dunia akademik di Inggris .

Namanya Yanuar Nugroho, pengajar di Institut Kajian Inovasi atau Manchester Institution of Innovation Research dan Pusat Informatika Pembangunan Universitas Manchester. Yanuar meraih penghargaan sebagai dosen terbaik 2009 dan hebatnya ia adalah satu-satunya orang Indonesia yang jadi dosen di Inggris. Menurut Yanuar, Desember tahun lalu, kriteria utama penilaian penghargaan tersebut adalah sumbangan akademik lewat penelitian, tulisan, seminar, kuliah dan konferensi. Selama dua tahun terakhir ini, ia terlibat pada lebih dari 15 penelitian yang didanai oleh Uni Eropa, Dewan Riset Inggris, Dewan Riset Eropa, serta Departemen Industri dan Perdagangan Inggris. Selain mempublikasikan tulisannya di berbagai jurnal internasional, presentasi di konferensi kelas dunia, dan menjadi dosen tamu di beberapa universitas termasyhur, seperti Oxford dan Cambridge. Nugroho adalah alumnus Teknik Industri ITB tahun 1994. Ia mendapatkan gelar PhD-nya dari Universitas Manchester dalam waktu kurang dari tiga tahun pada 2007, dan menyelesaikan post-doctoral pada 2008. Sejak Agustus 2008, Nugroho menjadi staf penuh di Universitas Manchester.


Ken Soetanto

Ken Kawan Soetanto mungkin menjadi orang Indonesia yang paling sukses berkiprah dari sisi akademik di luar negeri. Bayangkan, ia sudah mematenkan 31 penemuannya, 29 di Jepang, dua di AS, untuk bidang interdisipliner ilmu elektronika, kedokteran, dan farmasi.

Soetanto juga adalah peraih gelar profesor dan empat doktor sekaligus dari empat universitas berbeda di Jepang. Sebegitu terkenalnya Soetanto di Jepang sampai-sampai oleh mahasiswanya ia memiliki metode khusus mengajar yang diberi nama “Metode Soetanto” atau “Efek Soetanto”.Metode ini menekankan pada menggali aspek yang menyentuh hati mahasiswa dan mengumandangkan motivasi serta pemahaman tujuan yang ingin diraih. Pemerintah Jepang sangat menghargai Soetanto yang sudah menjadi warga Jepang ini. Satu penemuannya bernama NEDO (The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) memberinya penghormatan sebagai penelitian puncak di Jepang dalam rentang 20 tahun, 1987-2007. “Itu riset smart medicine atau obat cerdas yang mampu menelusuri sistem jaringan pembuluh darah untuk mencari sel-sel kanker dan melumpuhkannya,” kata Soetanto. Mengapa ia hijrah ke Jepang? Soetanto mengatakan, “Negara tanpa riset akan lemah. Riset harus dikembangkan melalui pendidikan yang baik. Di Indonesia, Soetanto pernah merasa terbuang. Tahun 1965, ketika terjadi pergolakan politik menentang komunisme, hak mendapat pendidikan Soetanto terampas. Sekolahnya, Chung-Chung High School di Surabaya ditutup untuk selamanya.

Soetanto hanya menyelesaikan pendidikannya sampai kelas I SMA. Selama tak lagi bersekolah, dia bekerja mereparasi elektronik di toko abangnya di Surabaya. Setelah uang terkumpul, berangkatlah dia ke Jepang tahun 1974.


Andreas Raharso - CEO Pertama

Satu lagi putra Indonesia yang membanggakan di luar negeri adalah Andreas Raharso. Pria berusia 44 tahun itu saat ini menduduki pimpinan atau CEO pada sebuah lembaga riset global Hay Group. Hay Group mempunyai jaringan di hampir belahan dunia dan berkantor pusat di Amerika. Klien dari Hay Group ini kebanyakan adalah para pemimpin dunia seperti AS, Perancis, dan Inggris. Jabatan yang diraih Andreas cukup fenomenal, karena merupakan satu-satunya orang Asia yang berhasil menduduki posisi puncak. Selama ini jabatan itu didominasi warga Amerika dan Eropa. Menilik prestasi dan kegigihan orang-orang Indonesia ini memang tidak kalah bahkan setara dengan ilmuwan dunia. Kesadaran bahwa kondisi pendidikan di Tanah Air masih belum kondusif membuat mereka harus meninggalkan Indonesia untuk meraih sukses. Di Tanah Air, dunia pendidikan kita saat ini malah masih mempersoalkan perlu tidaknya ujian nasional (UN). Sayang sekali.
